Buying Old 126...

1984 300 SD

Its got 390k, 150k on engine, rebuilt trans. A Mercedes shop is selling it to me. The car drove pretty well. No oil leaks, fired right up, good power. Body has no dents, AC works well, all windows except left rear work, SR works fine. Has alot of new stuff, radiator, some coolant lines, new brakes all around. Looks good.

Car has 2 problems

1. the left rear window goes down not up.

2. cruise is intermittent.

Other than that, its kind of harsh vibrations on hwy.

The seller wants $3k, given the level of new parts, it seems like a good deal.

What are your thoughts?

Seems like an OK deal. Any receipts for the new motor or other work?

The harsh vibration would concern me. Sounds like it might need a driveshaft and they are not cheap

It also could be as simple as bad tires or unbalanced wheels, too.

hi,

I agree, it seems like a good deal but you should have the car put on a lift so you can check for:
1. rust
2. check transmission mount and driveshaft flex disc(s) and center brg for damage(possible cause of vibration)
3. leaks of various fluids
4. esp. check rear lower control arms for rust.
5. check left and right cv axles(also possible cause for vibration) for wear and torn boots.
6. check condition of front suspension and brakes
7. check blowby(at oil cap)

You can use these items as leverage when negotiating a price.

This shop doesn't have alot of money in the car.

Sooooo.....they can fix a few things you find at no/low cost to them.

Good luck. Sounds like a nice car. with cold a/c......yea!

Look for hidden rust: Beneath the rear window in the trunk, along the bottom door edges, and inside the wheelwells.

Have the shop repair that rear window. It's not a difficult job, but they can do it quicker than you, and they will pay for the parts. Have them repair the cruise as well, if you care about having it. Have them fix as much as possible because after you buy, all repairs come out of YOUR pocket!
