'87 300tdt Wheel Bearing Experience and Question...
Dear Forum,
I have a nice, well serviced, '87 300tdt with some 220,000 miles. I have replaced, by MB service, the rear wheel bearings twice. So about every 80,000 miles. I Believe this is excessive. However, the front wheel bearings are original... odd... However, I'd like to replace these front bearings. Any advice on home-shop replacement would be appreciated. Thanks, Horace Last edited by Horace Thompson; 07-12-2005 at 02:55 PM. Reason: clarification |

Buy the bearings in quality kits.
Use a good quality bearing grease made for high temps and disc brakes. Get a few different types of punches to drive the races out of the hubs. If they are not giving you any trouble at this time look at your front brake pads and if you have ....say...40% remaining consider doing them then sence all the breaks must be removed to do the front wheel bearings. If you just had new brakes put on recently, well try not to get them all greasy..... |

Stay away from bearings made in China.
Mobil makes a good quality synthetic grease made for bearings and sold in grease gun cartridges, popularly available in most auto supply houses. All old grease must be removed before regreasing the wheel bearings. Search the archives using the keywords "bearing preload" and you'll get a lot of information that you need on this subject.
