Removal of Air Bag: 126 A/C Repait
Folks,
I have a 1991 560SEC that is not cooling so well in spite of everything has been checked out EXCEPT the return air flap under the dash. It's venting much air through the defrost vents, it's cool, but not cool enough for summer use (Virginia), and displays symptoms I see others mention in this forum as could be related to a potential problem with the return air flap. My question: how do I remove the passenger side air bag? I've seen mention of a single bolt/screw holding it in. But I can't locate where the screw is, what I have to do to unfasten the unit, etc. I know to disconnect the negative battery terminal first and how to get the bottom of the dash and bottom front "bumper" off. Any help would be appreciated. John |

Folks,
I figured out how to remove the passenger air bag from posts here and elsewhere. There's a five inch long bolt that goes up through the knee bolster into the center of the dash edge into the unit. Simply disconnect the battery, remove the bolt, pull out the unit. I also removed the knee bolster and under dash cover for more room to access the two vacuum actuators for the main air flap. The right vacuum acutator was indeed leaking. I replaced both units with new ones. My 1991 has "twist lock" tabs on the face of each actuator and snap on connections of the plunger arms to the center link. Wasn't too bad to replace, just a little cramped in there for my big hands. Bottom line: wasn't too difficult, about $100 in parts, and all A/C, heat, and defrost is coming out of the correct vents for the first time since I bought the car 3 years ago. And the A/C is COLD (BTW, I'm using 134a) John |
