'87 560sel - Engine Running With Ignition Off!
Love this forum! It has been a big help to a newbie, but I can't find any posts that address my problem, so here goes...
I have a 1987 560 SEL that has run perfect until today. It died as I was turning into parking lot at work & wouldn't restart. Searched on the forum & narrowed problem down to fuel pump relay. I used a jumper wire to bypass relay & car started right up! After patting myself on the back, I turned off ignition BUT THE ENGINE KEPT RUNNING! I'm sure ignition was completely off, I had the key in my hand. Pulling the jumper cut off fuel & killed engine. Do I have several problems going on here? Or is the engine running related to the relay bypass? This is my daily driver so I need to find a solution ASAP. All suggestions & advice appreciated! |
Without looking up the circuitry, I can't say for sure what all gets power from the relay, but I'd bet the gold in my teeth that ignition and fuel injection do. My vote is: Replace the relay and all will be well.

Thanks!
Thank you, Moneypit. I suspected the same thing, but wasn't sure.
Replacing that relay is top priority, but I'm having difficulty finding the part locally. So, that means several days of starting and stopping the engine with jumper until I can find part online & get it here. :( |
