With the battery disconnected, there is little to fear in regards to the airbag. Just work off to the side and not in front of the unit.
The most annoying thing is putting the wheel back in the same place it was. That was the problem with my other car. I couldn't get it back in the same slot and ended up losing the orig position -- so I just guessed basically.
