W210 gearshift knob replacement
 

I picked up a wood gearshift knob for my "new" 1998 E320. It comes in the mail tomorrow. what is the procedure for swapping the shift knob?

In my old 1999 Seville SLS all you did was pull up on the shift knob and out it came. Real easy (actually, too easy, I always worried about accidentally "yanking" the shift knob out during hard driving :eek: ).

But I am not sure how it is done in the Benz.

On the bottom of the shift knob there is a plastic collar that you need to turn clockwise about 1/2 turn. Then the collar pulls/snaps down off the shift knob. Then the knob just slides off.

Skiier...thank you very much. I'll put the new one this weekend.

It will take a lot of elbow grease to do this as I recall it took me nearly 1 hour to do it. The collar will come off eventually but it will take many tries.

I don't know how greasy your elbows usuallly get but mine was only a 5 minute job.
