Oily issues

I was just reading a recent thread about oil and had a few questions. I viewed this link: http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html and was wondering about the oil I use in my 1994 c280. I searched the page for a little understanding about which catagory my car falls into and I do see where pre 1998 cars would use an API classification of sj or sl. I am not sure what MB sheet numbers 229.3 or 229.5 mean and cannot find an acea classification in the oil I use. I cannot find my oil on the list. I have been using Valvoline Dura-blend 10w-30 which has an API of SL. My mechanic replaced a gasket about 6 months ago (car had 115,000 miles on it) and said the motor looks as clean on the inside as when new; better than most he has seen.

The other interesting question is: I have seen these Valvoline oil change centers recommending different types of valvoline based on mileage. I recall them recommending this dura blend up to approximately 75000-80000 then change to a "max" formula or some type of higher mileage oil. What's up with that? My engine seems to be "just breaking in" ;) with no leaks and clean bill of health every 3000 miles.

Most any premium oil in the market will do a great job if changed regularly as you are doing. 115,000 miles with frequent oil changes is not even a well broken in engine yet.

I would not bother with the so called high mileage oils. As long as you are changing regularly there is no need for them. These oils being recommended for certain mileage engines is nothing but a marketing campaign.

With todays motor oils, one should be alarmed any time that the inside of their engine is NOT squeeky clean. There is no reason for it not to be.

Have a great day,
