planetary gear set disassembly-needed?
During a "typical" (if there could ever really be one) AT rebuild (specifically, the 722.3 trans), how often is the planetary gear set disassembled to set end play on a one-way clutch and replace a couple o-rings? While I understand why it's worth it to set clutch, band and shaft play clearances properly, I wonder if disassembling the planetary just to check the end play of one sprag clutch is worth it. Anyone here have experience with this assembly? Thanks!

I'm no transmission tech, but the general rule I always use:
Is the time saved worth risking doing the job twice? Sometimes it is, most times, it's not. |
This is sort of in the "would it do more harm than good?" spirit. The planetary was working fine, and I may need some special little keeper tools to get it all apart. I usually like to be pretty thorough, but in almost every rebuild job you need to draw a line somewhere. I'm wondering if this is where it should be.
