Exclamation which way does the camshaft seal go in?

I am, still, in the process of replacing my headgasket on my 91 300e and am trying to put the camshaft seal on the timing chanin cover. silly me i forgot how it came out. it was stuck on with gasket maker and i had to spend a long time scraping and tearing the old one out and forgot how it was installed.
I am unsure, does it go in from the front of the timing chain cover( dosent actually fit, seal is to thick) or does it slide in from the back(fits perfect and snug)? I kind of remember the old one being installed from the front cause i am still scraping gasket maker out of the center grove.

thanks in advance
