Question shifting problem, need tech help please!

let me set the stage... 88 420sel w/123000 miles 4speed auto. From the time I got it firm shifts all except 3rd to 4th that one felt normal. It also doesnt seem to ever use 1st even from a stop except if you shift it manually. 2nd to 3rd shift when cold flares up between the gears. Now all is about the same but after warm, (it seems only when fully warm), it will not go into 4th until you let off the gas to just light pressure, then it acts like it went into neutral...nothing at all there! Pulled foot off gas shifted back into 3rd and drove home. I went to work 28 miles away in the morning, no problem, shifted into 4th, other shifts were same as usual. Left work in the afternoon all was normal as Ive known it, got almost to my destination 12 miles away and stopped at a stop sign (the 4th one in this trip) and it would not find 4th for the rest of the trip there ...and home too! I am not sure where to start and I dont have alot of money left, (just put on new tires, exhaust, and brake caliper) ouch! Please , any help would be much appreciated! thanks! euro
