Is my COmpressor bad?

The P/O of the 560SEL that I just bought NEVER used the a/c as he states and now the a/c doesnt work. My mech put some freon it and and everytime the a/c is engaged, I hear a loud rattling coming from the compressor. Is the whole compressor bad or is it just a clutch or some other related component?

Seriously, if you can't figure it out by looking at it, it's probably best left to a pro.

Aw...I was just being a wiseguy, but you quoted me before I could delete it. Anyhow, I said that because not only is it a Bad Idea to vent refrigerant out into the air, it's also quite possible to injure yourself with it. If you have the refrigerant recovered by a shop, you will likely be able to handle the r+r part yourself. First, what year and model are we talking about? Is it a 560 SEL like the original posters? And, to the original poster, it's possible for any number of things to make noise when the compressor is engaged, but if the compressor itself is rattling, its days are numbered. Consider replacing it before it blows crap all through the A/C system.

DO i have to add any oil to it ? or just bolt in and thats it oh right and make sure all o rings are replaced and good.

With a used compressor, I would suggest draining whatever oil is in it, then adding the correct amount and type of fresh oil before installing it. You should be able to find that information by using the Search function, or by posting up the year, model and engine type of Benz we're discussing...in which case somebody might know offhand, or be willing to look the info up.

i have a 1980 500SE w126, btw money bit i havent seen you on mb world in ages.

Hmmm...I don't see a 1980 W126 anywhere, and no 500-engined cars before 1984. In any case, you will be able to find instructions for checking and adding oil during a compressor r+r, as well as replacement procedures here: http://mb.braingears.com/

Essentially, you drain the oil out of both compressors. Measure the oil taken out of the old compressor, and put a like amount in the replacement. There are some instructions on adding more oil if you don't get a minimum volume out of the old one. Also, there are different compressors listed, so make sure you're looking at the correct procedure.

As for MB world, I kinda dropped that board when I found this one. The tech section is way better here, and I was looking for a place to learn.
