450SL Fuel Pump/No Start Diagnosis
Anyone know a routine to diagnose a no-start no-pump problem on my 1974 450-SL? This car had a hard frontal impact - say 6 + years ago, and has not been started since..... Now I hear the relay clicking but no pump action... IS THERE AN INERTIA SWITCH/ACCIDENT SENSOR OR OTHER DISABLING DEVICE ON THIS YEAR AND MODEL? If no..... any other recommendations before I pull the pump and hotwire it to check?
Also - Cannot get car to fire on starter fluid alone - but it has an updated ignition and HUGE spark.... Have not yet checked compression but it sounds good and must have been going about 100 MPH when it hit the concrete barricade as it tore the right wheel clean off. Anybody have experience starting these fallen angels? PS: Emerald Green metallic or it wouldn't be worth the bother....but oh what a beauty. |
one of the
few things that will ruin a bosch fuel pump is sitting. even for a couple of years is enough to stick one. i dont know if you can take it apart and clean it or not. i wouldnt be surprised.

no start accident
For your safety pleaecheck the subframe and a frames, bushings and ball joints! Cracks may exist at any above areas. recall in effect on that model for all 107s. An accident such as yours, may well excerbate such weakness! Check, Check, good luck Abe G

Thanks!
Hey folks - thanks for the tips...
All the framework is being done in a certified shop - and I'm installing a complete front subframe. Biggest issue is making sure the attaching point for the Pass Side suspension linkage is 100% accurate and WAY strong. I'm an old SAE certified engineer from Ford so I'll be careful as you recommend. Fuel pump teardown upcoming - I'll repost if I'm not getting power at the pump but the relay "sounds" good.... and a frozen pump probably wouldn't make a sound. I'm looking for some relatively common pieces - such as a complete RF headlight, the metal splash pan that connects across the bottom across from right to left fender....a pair of radiators (ac and coolant/trans) and the various brackets etc that were noodled. I'm also worried about the empty PS reservoir. ANYBODY with experience with a long storage restart of a 4.5 litre car would be a welcome penpal - I'm also looking for someone with an untouched 1974 USA spec 450SL to help me with underhood pictures and some advice as I replumb the vacuum system under the hood.
