recently purchased a 1970 Mercedes 280SE (sedan) whose prior owner included in the purchase a new set of heater/ac levers (the multi-colored ones, 4 in the set) to replace the old, broken ones. These must, of course, be installed and this looks to be a rather daunting task. Is there a relatively easier way to install these than the "obvious" way?

The obvious way is the only to install OE handles. There are some aftermarket ones that hook to the original but as the original are brittle & have already broken, these are mostly for looks.
