I've had my '94 E320 Cabriolet changed at Jiffy Lube twice and been happy both times. In fact, on the most recent change, the mechanics noticed a tiny leak in the fuel line that appeared only when the engine was on and the system was under pressure. They didn't have the time/parts to repair it but I took it to my local MB mechanic who did.

I used to change my own oil but in winter it's no fun ... and I ain't getting any younger. So I've previously had Jiffy Lube do oil changes on an MB 420SEL and a BMW733 and even my 1952 Cadillac convertible, and never had any problems.

At one point I routinely had my oil changed at another chain store, I gave up on them after the second time they failed to correctly reinstall the filter O-ring and caused an oil leak. In addition, it is unlikely that these chains are going to install OEM filters.

If you want someone with very little training who could care less about your car than by all means go to one of these lube places or if you really care about your car and the brand oil you'd like to use than DO IT YOURSELF= great satisfaction and a bonus that you'll save quite a bit of money.

I personally know of two cars ruined by Jiffy Lube. My friend had one that they failed to tighten the drain plug and he lost his oil on the highway. He had it towed back and they filled it up, put in a new drain plug and gave him ten free oil changes. When I saw it blowing smoke from the tailpipe I helped him get an engine rebuild from the manufacturer under warranty. GM did send a tech to examine the motor to see why the crank bearings went bad. The other was my own car. When I was too busy to do it I took my car to jiffy lube. I said “just change the oil, nothing else”. But they pulled my K&N air filter and said it needed replacement. I told them its a million mile filter that only needs to be cleaned and oiled. “Just put it back and don’t touch anything.” Almost 3000 miles later the check engine light cam on and, hundreds of miles form home, the air filter housing was so loose that the screen with ¼” holes was so clogged with leaves that the light came on. My temperature gauge was up a notch. I drove 40,000 miles a year for business and I know the engine was damaged. I had to sell the car. I won’t ever use or recommend Jiffy lube and am leery about the others as well.

its not hard to change oil. it takes a whopping 7 minutes to drain and refill with a new filter. why would anybody pay $40 bucks for that.

3 friends of mine myself included have lost engines cause of valvoline
quick lube...and I like real nice oil so i have to do it myself...

but if you want someone else to do it... here in the midwest we have
big O tire store.... so go there and buy a set of tires and they will rotate
them free every 5000 miles... and when your in just have them change your oil.. (everyone says 3k oil change but 5k is ok) and your manual says 7500 so this will work great.... If you get a real nice set of tires like michelins and you do this they will last 100k miles.... :sun_smile

i know it is pretty easy to change my own. and the quicky's quick lube never seems to have the filter i need. and they give me $2 credit for the filter i just paid $8 for. but they are pretty quick and i can watch. the manager was a student of my wife and he thinks she walks on water so they try to do a good job. but all in all i really should change my own. i also only use oil that they have to take off the shelf and pour out of a quart container. that oil from the drums gives me the willies!

I have a similar arrangement with the local jiffy lube as does Tom W, however without the manager's adoration of my wife. They use my filter (Mann or Knecht) give a $2 filter credit, and let me watch; sometimes I can even get in the pit to see the underside of my 94 E320. I ask for Mobil 1; they pour from the can; 2 years running without any, repeat any, trouble.

You get what you pay for, the three best choices for changing your oil are:
Yourself, dealer, or a good shop. (by good shop I mean they know MB's and do good work)

I would expect to pay about $80 for an oil change on that ML with Mobil 1 and an OE filter.

well, i tell you boys... (although i change my own oil)

i have only learned this lesson recently... i have always had to buy
a set of tires ever other year... but i was sitting in sams club watching all
the old people walk in and all they wanted were michelins... and finally i ask a
old fellow and he told me that if you buy a set and rotate them the would last 100k miles... so now days these places spin balance and rotate and take out any nails every 5k miles... so if you have a place like big O.... then
you can just pull in and have the oil changed too... bring your own filter and
mobil 1 or rotella and let me tell you there is no joy like getting a free tire when they pull out a nail.....

Probably the biggest problem with these shops is the oil in the 55 gallon drums.These drums are sent back and refilled.But the bad part is they don't check to see if the drums are dirty inside.It's not uncommon for drums filled with new oil to be contaminated with dirt,used oil,or even antifreeze.
