How do I replace an E320 (W124) Bumper Cover?
Can anyone provide me basic instructions on removal and replacement of the front bumper cover on a 1994 E320 Cabriolet (W124)?
Looking from underneath, there are a series of standard bolts on the frame side and removing them should remove the assembly. Is it that simple? Or are there special clips or more there than meets the eye? I've located a bumber cover on-line (about $150, primed) but it appears this is the "base" of an assembly on which is mounted an impact strip. There are also moldings on either side 'neath the headlights. Only the bumper cover is damaged (a chunk missing near the tow hook door) and so I can possibly re-affix the impact strip and corner moldings to the new bumper cover. But I'm thinking I might buy an impact strip, too, to assure the final paint matches. Any step-by-step advice will be appreciated. Tim |
It is that simple - just jump into and you'll be done before you know it. There's one bolt in the center and a couple on the outside as I recall. You will also have to unhook the outside temperature indicator in the front center. The bumper doesn't even weigh anything either - it's a very simple job. It wouldn't hurt to have an extra pair of hands for a few minutes but even that isn't entirely necessary.

Thanks alot, Deanyel.
My experience with M-B as well as other makes has been to discover (half-way into a repair job) there's some mystery bolt or hidden secret tab that mystifies me. This bumper cover job looked a little toooooo simple. Glad to hear the job is as straightforward as it looks. I appreciate your advice! Hey, you don't happen to know anything about seatbelt sensors, do you? My seatbelt retractor (on the passenger side) goes keeps doing the funky chicken unless I keep the buckle snapped. I know some sensor probably needs replacing, but I have no clue where it is located. Tim |
