Where is the EGR tube on a 98 C230?

I pulled a P0400 code from my wifes 1998 C230. I have seen the posts here about the clogged pipe. Can some one tell me where I would find this pipe on this car so I can remove it and ream it out?

ANyone know?

I am not certain, but the EGR is the copper colored disc just above where the bottom radiator hose goes into the water pump.

But I am not certain.

I am certain I was wrong in my last post.

Is anyone certain of where it is?

I will take alook tonight if I remember...

But here is something to get you going:

There is a black plastic cover on the front of the engine with the Merc star on it. You can remove it just by pulling on it. Once it is off you will see some little solenoids to the lower left (as you are facing the front of the engine). These are controls for the EGR valve. They have a couple of little tubes that lead to the EGR valve which is somewhere in that neighborhood. Should be a round metal thing with a pipe going to the exhaust manifold. I will try to take a look tonight and give you a better answer tomorrow. I am not sure what needs to be cleaned though. Hopefully someone can help with that info.

OK.. I just took a look. It is simpler than I remembered. You don't have to remove the black cover (although that is quite simple anyway).

Basically, if you have your hand on the dipstick handle and then just move your hand 6 inches toward the back of the engine you will be touching the EGR valve. It is a circular gold colored thing. It has a small black hose going to the top of it. This is the control hose. It has a large hose on the side of it which goes over to the intake manifold I assume. It sits on a bracket that has a metal tube in the middle of it that goes to the exhaust manifold. I am guessing that would be the clogged tube but I am not positive. I am not sure what it would be clogged with since these engines burn no oil.

Hope that helps and if anyone knows I am wrong they will say so!!

I am sure John won't like this guessing,

Mpolli that is the valve your describing, wouldn't the tube be on the intake side and go from the sump into the intake?

mpolli 08-26-2005 12:17 AM

Sump?

The EGR valve feeds exhaust into the intake manifold. I don't think the sump is involved. There are 2 hoses and one "tube" connected to it. I don't know which one would be clogged. What is P0400 anyway?

I just did some searching and it appears that the likely cause is the clogged tube from the valve to the intake manifold. Second choice is possible a sticking EGR valve. I have not had the pleasure of working on that so I don't know the best way to go about it. I will look in My Haynes manual but I'm not sure the Brits have that system installed.

Thanks for the info guys. The CEL came on a day after I hosed off the engine because the belly tray under the motor had been off for six months, so it was dusty and dirty. Not sure if the water may have caused a problem.
