I have a 1989 saab convertible turbo and I have been working on it... it lost a turbo so i replaced it today it I lost it as well... I was exspecting smoke but the engine caught fire... 16 year old teenage daughter went balastic...
I pulled over in front of a ladies house and she ran out with a long hose for me.. the top of the engine burned and the hood burned but I salvaged the car. The frantic 16 year old called the fire dept who was working a wreck about a mile away (that how they got there so fast they said) It took them about 15 minutes... if it was not for the ladies hose boy they whole thing would have been a giant fire....(the fire was centered on the fuel injector rail so it was just about 30 seconds before it went up totally....
lesson learned..
1. always carry a fire ext.....
2. always keep a clean engine and watch your wireing..
3. fires in engine spread in the hood pad... they get oil soaked and burn.
