What to check out on a '92 600SEL?

A nearby public auction will be selling a repo'd '92 600SEL with 55,000 miles. The car has a bit of a rough and uneven idle and if you rev it and take your foot off the gas it will stall. Since this is the first year of the V12, are there any major mechanical issues with this model? I wasn't looking for a project but how many early (read cheaper) V12's come up so if the price is right, I may jump on it.

I agree with M.B. Doc, a 1992 600 SEL WITHOUT pristine and confirmed maintenance records is easily the worst investment you could make, even worse than buying swamp land to build your house on.

If you have at least set aside $30,000 to $40,000 (on top of the buying price) to "begin" to sorten out a problematic early production W140 V-12, then go ahead, if not, run away...

I agree. A cheap V12 is the most expensive MB you'll ever own. Read up on a few of my projects, especially the rewiring of the ETA's and MAF's. Click on the link below my signature to get to my web site.
