140 (1999 S600) lock problem

After replacing the batteries in the remote control key unit, and synchronizing the system as per the manual - I have no indicator (green/red) lights in the door handles or rear panel. All lock, light, flashing and alarm functions are present and operational - but no green/red lights!
any ideas greatly appreciated.
