91 2.6e overheating
just bought this car and was told it was overheating  ....haven't checked it myself because of fear that it might blow the headgasket....how can i check to see whats wrong with it..the previous dealer said he removed the thermostat to see if it would fix it....he then said it still overheated but took longer to do it....theres not any water in the oil or extreme pressure build up in the rad...any info would be greatly appreciated

need help fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mercedes do
NOT cool well without a thermostat. it is a bypass design in which if the thermostat is removed only half of the water will go to the radiator. the other half will recirculate back tothe block without going to the radiator. so go get the correct thremostat, a german brand, please and install it and see if it still overheats. if it does then you have other problems. but do the thermostat first because you wont know anything until you do.

where can i find a rad.

Good grief, you can't figure out how to buy a radiator for a 1991 2.8 ( Not a 2.6). Try clicking the FastLane button at the top of the page. They are about $250 to $300 or so. Available from about a zillion sources, including Autozone or MacParts.
I would get rid of the car quick, as there will many more complicated and expensive problems to deal with. Steve |
i know what i have and you don't....its a 2.6......and yes i saw the rad for 300+, but i was wondering if someone offered a cheaper one..i bought the car to sell and don't need to spend more than its worth...oh yeah, autozone doesn't offer it here...they have a part number but the manager of our commercial account tells me that they cannot get it.

got a chance to drive the car today after the thermostat replacement....runs cool driving down the road but stop and go driving and the temp rises....as soon as i drive for a little while it cools down...the electric fans are on with the a/c and come on if i let it idle without the a/c and the temp get up there...i'm thinkin the fan clutch may be bad....i let it idle with the a/c on and the temp got almost to the 110 mark...i then shut it off and checked the fan clutch...the fan still spins pretty freely...shouldn't it be pretty much locked in if the temp is nearing the boiling point....it has never boiled yet..thanks guys
