Car: 1994 Mercedes C220
Check Engine Code: 1700

I was getting a check engine light and took it to a mechanic friend (certified BMW, but does do MBZ) of mine...He used his SnapOn to pull out a code, which is MBZ proprietary...Can any one tell me what a 1700 code means?
I thought OBDII meant the end of mfg. specific codes!

Thanks,
Chandra

P1 700 is for up-shift delay. Warm-up catlyst quicker by holding trans in gear longer for 2-3 shift. Doubt if any other cars use this code. MB does this thru the kickdown cable that has vacuum element built on to it. Vacuum leak in system! usually the cable element.

MB DOC is this

the Bowden Cable? If not what is the Bowden cable used for?
thanks,

The main purpose of the cable(bowden) is to time the shift points to throttle position. This is one extra use of the cable!

Upshift delay...strange...I got this on startup and the car runs OK, shifts OK too. Maybe a parameter out of range?

The engine should rev higher than normal when cold to get cat warm quicker and thus lower the emmisions. This is the function of the upshift delay.

OBD2 codes are not propietary but rather mandated by the US government. The problem is, I'd bet as Mb Doc said, Mercedes may be the only company to use this method, therefore the code is only in print with Mercedes.

I have heard that the 1994-95 C Class was equipped only with OBDI. Does it have OBDII? I have heard both and am not sure as to what my 95 C280 has. Thanks.

The 1994-1995 C Class has OBDII, but is not fully compliant. The connector is located under the dash near the gas pedal. I'm not sure what the limitation of the OBDII on these cars. It wasn't until 1996 that cars needed (fully compliant) OBDII by law. Maybe the C class was the first to get OBDII in the MBZ family?

Check engine lamp can come on while driving if fault is SEVERE!! In most cases the emission fault must happen more than once & then comes on the next start-up. The 1994 cars were the first in the country with ODB2, & they were fully compliant.

MBDOC...Is there a way to get a list of all the MB proprietary codes for the 1994 C220? OBDII.com has provided a list of the "federal" codes. OBDII.com references an EPA doc (which you can read) that says the 94-95 C220 are not fully compliant....I'm no expert though.

Thanks,
Chandra
