98 e320 front end noise

When traveling over moderately rough roads, I have been getting a dull noise from the front suspension on my e320. My mechanic tells me it's the strut bearing point. He said that the point of bearing is tight when the car is sitting on the ground and also tight when it's raised, as on a lift, so it's difficult to diagnose. He also indicated there is no way to tighten this area of the suspension, except to replace the struts. Has anybody experienced this on their MB? Does anybody know how difficult/expensive strut/shock replace is?
Is it a DIY job?

more common would be your lower control arm bushings.

I agree with the lower control arm bushings.

YOU also want to make sure the "subframe" mounting bolts are tight!

I would get your mechanic to show you what he's talking about. Your car doesn't have struts. The coil spring and shocks are separate and the shock doesn't even sit inside the spring to give the illusion of a strut. Cars with struts do frequently have problems with the bearing assembly at the top where it meets the body of the car up under the well, but I don't see what he is talking about.

I appreciate the responses/input. I never thought a Benz was a "strut" car, either. I'll attempt to check bushings and mounting bolts and also ask my mechanic to show me what he sees as the problem. Maybe I misunderstood his diagnosis.

Also check your control arm links - I chased this problem for a while - when I replaced them all was quiet!
