decision support for 1990 300ET

Hi guys,

I'm looking forward to buy a W124 T.
And here I have a offer and I don't know if it's a good one or not.
Perhaps you can give me a tip or two?

Now here is the Offer:
1990 300te in reasonable condition with 250,000 Miles. Car has Ohio registration. Car belongs to my wife but we moved to Florida last march and we drove our trucks to there and left the Benz behind at my families. The interieur is tan, and its not cloth, but i have no clue if the material is leather. The right door window doesnt stay up so we taped it. We took doorpanel off and have the parts, but im not gonna fix, the parts come with car. Engine runs a bit rough right now but thats probably from sitting. Tires are bald BUT i have 4 very nice tires and mercedes/amg rims that i will include. I also have 4 used spare shocks that i will include (2 are Koni) and i have a luggage cover that i will include. So basicly he doesnt need to much except for some elbow grease. Car has an aftermarket radio/cd player in it. The benz is going since we drive our trucks all the time, since we trailer a lot and for our freetime we bought a convertible.

He's askin 2000 Bucks.
Waht do you think? To expensive? A quarter million miles is a lot, but for a Mercedes W124? What could be bad and has to replace?
Should I grap it or stay away from it? And what the hell he means with "some elbow grease"?

I believe he's sugar coating the offer. If everything was as simple to fix as he claims, he would have already done it to provide a complete car for sale. I'd be careful with this sale, you may spend more money to fix it than it's worth when fixed.

There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Benz.

I'd keep looking...

I just bought an 88 300TE, in much better condition (and for a few thousand more). If I were you, I'd keep looking for a car about which you could know more (service records, carfax history that says it's been in salt-free areas, etc).

Also, I'd definitely get a pre-purchase inspection on any car that I was seriously considering. At least for me, it's very useful to get a neutral person's experienced eye looking at a car.

Alternatively, if you have the space & time, get the price down and make it a project car to learn on -- that's what I'd love to do =).

Ditto.

By the sounds of it, this car has been neglected. They knew they weren't going to hold on to it, so they let everything slide. This car will likely end up costing you a fortune, and it will still not be right. If you were looking for a project, and the price were a couple of HUNDRED dollars, then it may be worth it.
He'll find someone who doesn't know MBs to buy it, and it will be their problem -- but you'd be smart not to make it your problem.

Just my 2 cents... arguably worth that.
