Thumbs up Rear glass - what's interchangeable with the the 126s?

I could have sworn I read that '86+ rear glass won't swap into '85 and older vehicles for some reason. Does anyone know any truth to this?

Ideally I'd like to keep OE Benz glass in my vehicle to replace my SD's rear unit as the laminate is peeling but the cost is absurd new. Local boneyards have glass for $25 at the most around here.

Thanks for any help!

what

do you consider absurd? i believe i could get a new one locally at the local glass shop for 250 to 300. i havent checked but 250 is what i pay for a new windshild from them. my sec rear glass is unique and i replaced it with a used unit. 2 years later it is fogging on the edge so i kindof wish i had sprung for a new one.

t walgamuth -

Someone told me an OE sheet of rear glass was in the upper $300 area plus install. While aftermarket was in the lower $200 installed.

bribenz -

Hrm, so I'd just need the correct window seal for my SD and any 126 rear glass?

So I'd need the correct seal for the model year the glass came from?

I would replace the seal with a new one.

Some tips:

-I have heard that the W126 back glass will shatter REALLY easily. Be VERY careful removing/installing this glass, and watch how you handle it.
-Rear glass for this car is quite a bit more expensive than a windshield. I once had a windshield replaced in my 83 300SD for $300 including tax, and they quoted $1400 for the back glass (can't remember if it included installation & tax or if it was just for the glass)
-The seals are definately different between the earlier and later glass. The trim is different, so make sure you buy the seal based on the year of car you are installing the glass into.
-The mouldings go into the seal BEFORE the glass is put in the car, not after! The install method should be: 1. Install seal onto glass 2. Install moulding into seal 3. Install seal/moulding/glass onto the car.
-Check carefully for rust when you take the old glass out. The W126 is well known to rust under the rear window (where the corners of the trunk lid meet the bottom edge of the back glass). Make sure to treat this area appropriately. There is a forum member who found extensive rust there and posted his pics.. perhaps you can search for these.

Hope this helps!

Neal

This is what I am about to repair. The windshield is cracked, ordered a new unit ($300 installed) and I am asking them to R&R the rear. They offered to come out and remove the windshield, allow me to clean and repaint, then return for the install. I am going to ask them to do both with new gaskets. I'll share the findings.

Now to find that thread...

WOW. OLD THREAD.

I put a rear sheet of glass in that SD from an '86 420SEL. Fit fine. Still there actually. The trim and seal were different as I recall, but it was insanely long go I barely recall.

Something to know about MB glass. The rear tends to be laminated ( like front glass ) rather than the tempered glass most cars have.

Laminated glass is two pieces of glass stuck together with a clear rubbery glue. This glass will crack and run but stay together. This glue tends to keep objects from penetrating the glass.

Tempered is a solid piece that will shatter into a million small pieces like a side window. If you want to see tempered glass break, on You Tube look up " Sovereign Citizen gets window broken ". ( Sorry this is the best I can do on short notice. )

There will be a marking on the glass that should note tempered / laminated or at least some code.
