Oil pressure gauge

Hi all,

My oil pressure gauge has started to work inconsistently. Is there anyway of testing whether its faulty without buying a new one?
How can you check the oil pressure of an engine?
My cars a w124.

Cheers
Toby.

Hi Toby

You can try replacing the sender unit on the oil filter housing and see if it corrects the problem. It's a little cheaper than the gauge

If you can find, or someone here knows, the sending unit's resistance at 1.0 Bar and 3.0 Bar, you can get two resistors from Radio Shack, substitute them one at a time for the sending unit, and see what the gauge reads. If it reads 1.0 and 3.0, it's a bad sending unit. If not, it could be the gauge.

Best Regards,
Jim

or disconnect the wire from the sending unit completely. The gage should read at one extreme. Then touch the wire to the block, gage should go to opposite extreme.
