108 transmission question
Just wondering; My car has a floor mount shifter, not on the column. When the car is turned off, key removed, steering wheel locks, but I'm able to put the car into different gears.
What's the fix or is that the way it is? |
bump; someone has to know....or do you need to go out and check your car.
|
I am pretty sure this is perfectly normal...the early cars did not have a transmission interlock. Not sure what year they started...what year is your car? I will double check my '72 tomorrow but as I recall you can take it out of park with the key out.

Never bothered me until today; could be safety issue, with kids around.....
thanks.... Maybe people will look at their car tommorrow also. |
Old Car
Its old, it will do that. All the way up to '85 acutally.
I would reccommend a newer Mercedes if you are concerned. When I was 6 I ran my parents 1981 Mercedes into their fire works stand they owned because it didn't have a shifter lock. I know first hand, this could be very dangerous and sort of cool too! |
I don't think the shift lock was institued until the early 90's. My '87 SDL doesn't have it. Maybe that's one of the things that was added in the '89 revision?
Thanks David |
In follow up neither my '72 nor '88 has the interlock, so I think it was not started until the '90's, as another responder had said.
|
I've got it in my 1990
|
Not in my '89. Just make sure the parking brake works.
