suspension idler arm
 

I have a 560SEL 1986 that was inspected today. I was told that my suspension idler arm bushing will soon need replacement. I have not heard of any suspension component called an "idler arm" before. Can someone point me in the right direction as to what part this is.

it is
 

a component that is just across from the steering box. it is kindof a dummy steering box. the right outer tie rod attaches to it. this is a pretty easy do it yourself. unbolt and bolt on the new.

What are the symptoms of a fading or failing idler arm?

Turning noise, poor tracking, its sometimes similar to bad ball joints.

Sloppy steering, front end wobble--- simular to bad tie rod ends, as the front ends can not hold toe specifications

Does the idler arm need to be unbolted from the tie rods to change out the bushings? Or does it have enough play to move the bolt and the upper bushing around a bit?

The most pronounced symptom is "wandering" on the road. It prevents an accurate toe setting and gives a little play in the steering wheel.

If the 126 is like the other MB's on which I've replaced idler arm bushings, the answer is no. You can leave the tie rod ends connected to the arm, remove the pivot bolt and swing the arm out of the way.
