Rethreading Steering Knuckle
 

Dear friends:
If some one have some good tip in how to rethread a damaged thread of the steering knuckle 18mm x 1.0 on Mercedes Benz 300 SD - 1982 it will be appreciated.

Assuming you were removing the knuckle and it came loose and banged the spindle threads on the deck. I have always had good results cleaning mildly buggered threads using a thread file, in fact had to use the file on one of my steering knuckles when I rebuild the front suspension a couple years ago.

First, thanks so much for your tip. I was thinking in buy a die of 18mm X 1.0
and without remove the knuckle of the car rethread just the damaged thread at the end of the cone where a nut hold the bearings and hub together.
In my case this is thread that is damaged.
How left and right are defined; by the driver side as reference or looking the car from the front?. It many times bring confusion.
In my case the passenger side is the bad one.

I liked your suggestion too :cool:. But everyone should have a thread file in their bag of tricks, they come in very handy at times.

What is a Thread file and where can you get one? Are there different sizes?

A thread file is a 4 sided file that has the common thread & pitch for both metric and SAE threads (4 of each at each end). Should be able to locate one at any reputable tool supply or parts house. I think I paid a whopping $6 or so 25 years ago. Don't need it too often but sure is nice to have on hand.
