OK, so what's the secret----rear window

I am TRYING to install the rear window on my W126 ( 1982 300SD). I have a new seal. I installed the glass to the glass channel, and the trim in its channel, but as soon as I pick it up, the trim pops out of the channel. The seal seems just a little loose. When I fit the glass and seal to the opening, it looks like it should fit. Its the trim that is beally getting to me. I was so frustrated, I had to walk away and consult my buddies here on the MercedesShop. Anyone in Bel Air, MD want to install a rear glass? I am getting desparate!

I have not done a window on one of these cars but the chevy trucks I have done you put the seal around the glass then use a string in the goove that the body metal fits in to withi the string wrapped all the way around lay the window on the opening then from inside pulling on the strig you should be able to get the seal to work over the body metal. Then you install the trim to hold it in place. the trim tightens up the seal.this looks to me how the seal works on my 240

My memory is foggy here, but I remember this:

-old W126 (-1985) trim goes in LAST after the glass & seal are in
-new W126 (1986-) trim goes in WITH the glass & seal

I remember pulling the trim (but leaving glass & window in) when I had my 83 300SD painted. When they were done, I unmasked the seal and put the trim back in. Never took the window out, so I know it's possible to put just the trim in. I've heard the newer ones are IMPOSSIBLE to put the trim in if you didn't do it with the window.

I used a rubber mallet (carefully) and had a couple of dabs of 3M weatherstrip adhesive on the back end of the trim. Went in without a problem.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong...

Neal
