Brake Fluid Dot 4+???

I replaced the brakes on my 2001 ML320. Not a bad job at all. When complete I needed to add some fluid. The reservoir states DOT4+ fluid. Does anyone know what a compatible fluid would be to the MB fluid? I have had no luck finding any DOT 4+ rated brake fluid.

Plenty of it at your Mercedes dealer.

Or, a Volvo dealer.

I also found it at Autozone, any decent auto parts store should have it.

You would do fine with any DOT 4 rated brake fluid. The + in DOT 4 just gives an incremental amount of boil protection in the fluid..... someting I'd only worry about if I was doing a lot of high-speed stopping on the autobahn or summer driving through Donner's Pass in the Sierra Nevada Range.

Some on this site get by with DOT 3. You wouldn't be abusing your car if you use this grade. All three types (DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 4+) are compatible with each other and can be mixed without concern.

Instead of topping off after the brake job, you should consider exchanging the fluid completely. It should be done every two years. If you search, there's a lot written on this subject. Bleeding about 250 ml from each corner should do it.

I use two good fluids, and alternate them so I can tell the difference between the new and old when I flush it.

Valvoline Synpower is either DOT4 or 4+.

ATE/TEVES Superblue would be DOT4+, except blue fluid doesn't meet any DOT spec, DOT brake fluid is clear or amber. (ATE is a major supplier of MBZ brake components)
