My '92 500SEL gets a whopping 10-12 mpg in city driving, but on the highway that figure soars to maybe 16-17! This not a car for the faint of heart at the gas station, to put it mildly....not when 25 gallons could drain your wallet of $70 or so. But then fuel economy is not why these cars were built....moving 3 tons around with a 5-liter V-8 was never designed to be fuel-efficient. And the window sticker on mine says that a $2000 "pay to play" tax (gas guzzler) was imposed to make that impressive mileage all that much more enjoyable :)

Wow I didn't realize the M119 did that bad! My friends S320 gets very high 20's on the highway and around 20 in town.

10-12 is like S600 mileage!

thanks for reply

I know that 500sel is a gas guzzler. I spoke with a guy who has s420 and he got 650 miles on full tank city/highway. I never push my cars but it seems to burn 9-10 mpg city/highway which I think is too low. And as Hatterasguy said its like s600 mpg. Also car smells gas and smokes out exhaust which also make me feel that there is a problem. If I can get 12mpg in city and 15 on highway its OK but Im not. I believe your car is in good shape so if my car burns way more than yours I have a problem. Thanks for reply now I have numbers to work with. Any ideas why my car burn so much fuel besides that I floor it every intersection? O2 sensor is new btw
Thank you
Victor

Not all 119s are that bad. A 4.2 119 motor in a 124 will get numbers similar to the S320 - 20 in town and high 20s on the highway.

Its an old car I am no gasser expert but I would suspect the following:
Tired injectors
bad o2 sensors
Dirty plugs/air filter
Carrying lots of crap
Driving hard

650 miles out of an S420 is pushing it but not amazing. 26.5 gallon capacity means if he was getting 25mpg he could have done it. Granted he would have been an fumes pulling into the gas station. 25mpg is very doable in an S420. Figure 60-70 on the highway with the cruise on.

plink49 11-28-2005 10:13 PM

Hatterasguy.....I think you are confusing engine models with chassis models. The 119 engine is the 5 liter V8 which has no connection whatsoever with the S320 V6 engine (I don't know the engine number offhand) other than both are in the W140 chassis models. Obviously, the V8 is going to get lesser mileage than the V6.

Hatterasguy 11-28-2005 10:27 PM

No I am not. The S320 has an M104 I6. The S420/500 both have M119 V8's. The S350D has a 603 I6 turbo charged diesel. The S600 has an M120 V12.
I was contrasting the engines. My point was his car should be doing better.

I think I shall be able to do at least 12mpg in city and 17 highway. My engine harness is falling apart that makes me think that some sensor shorts out thus giving me very rich mixture. Any ideas where to get harness for decent price? Friend of mine has 20% discount with MB dealer and he can get harness for me for $420. Does it sound fare?

tivoliman 11-28-2005 11:21 PM

I'm cool with it

We get about 15-17 MPG in the summer city
air conditioning with highways - 22-25 MPG

I make heavey use of the cruise control

Victor300E 11-28-2005 11:29 PM

Thanks a lot guys. Those MPG numbers make me happy for 5 liter motor. So I definatelly have problems with my mixture if I get 8-10mpg combined driving with no A/C in 50 degree weather.

My 95 S420 was rated at 15 city/20 highway. That's about what I got. I was impressed that it would hold 20mpg on the highway even with extra weight in my right shoe.

I'm impressed with what I read about S320 fuel efficiency. My 91 300SE was rated at 16 city/20 highway. Reality was more like 17 city/19 highway. Tells you something about how unmatched the M103 is to the W126.
