Hood Pad Adhesive
 

Hello to all,

Does anyone have the 411 on what type of adhesive to use on a new hood pad? I imagine that it has to be high-temperature tolerant, among other things.

By the way, how about some insight on a release agent to clear the old adhesive/crud build up off prior to installing the new hood pad?

The most frequently used is 3M SUPER Trim Adhesive, not the regular, but SUPER. It's a spray can adhesive.

I wouldn't worry about getting all the old pad and adhesive off. I was originally worried about the same thing but decided the risk to my paint from stray solvent wasn't worth it.

So I just scraped off the old stuff and used 3M SUPER Trim adhesive. I checked my old post and it's been 3 1/2 years now (time flies!) and it is still sticking with no problems.

The SUPER trim adhesive is the way to go. Just get all "loose" old stuff off but don't worry about absolute cleanliness. The directions on the can are important. The temp is important. You spray the pad AND the hood (don't forget the sheet over engine, fenders). It should go on "fluffy", if not, you are too close. Wait as per the can, then apply pad to hood. It's very sticky so practice fit first!!!

One can wasn't quite enough for me.

Just make sure your hood is all the way up to 90degrees, start at the top and work down, Use a paint roller to smooth out once on. Good luck

Super 90 is my 3M adhesive of choice... costs a bit more then the 77. Double coat both the hood and the pad..

I like to use laquer thinner in a spary bottle (ie an old wheel cleaner sprayer) and plastic putty knives to get the old goo off.. Work 1' sq. sections at a time.

Two people make hanging the pad Much easier!

Eek! I would not use 77 or 90, both of those are much lighter-duty adhesives. I'm surprised you were able to get the 90 to work at all.

Interesting, I have one car that's pushing 5 years on super 90 w/ not a droop/drop etc..

I've prob. done 20+ cars w/ super 90... Works great on SEC headliners too:)
