I can't open my gas cap without accessing the rear panel......
 

1992 300TE 4Matic. A recent purchase and I cannot open the gas cap (auto locked) except releasing the lock through the rear panel (next to the First Aid Kit). Can someone tell me where the lever/button is inside the car - in the proximity of the drivers seat? There MUST be an easier way! HELP

the element at the gas door is likely defective, if it was working properly, when the car is unlocked the gas door should also unlock, the release lever you are using is only to be used in the event of a central locking system failure. i would start at the vacuum element at the gas door if the rest of the central locking systam works as normal.
