Had enough of the stalling-need some ideas.

86 560sl.

Occassionally just stalls for no apparent reason. Has to sit for 10-15 mins then will re-start. Happened to me yesterday in front of my kids school-he was mightily embarassed.

What I've done to try to fix:

New fuel pumps, filters.
New fuel pump relay.
New coil, cap, rotor.

Acts like vapor lock.

Thanks.

JB

yep

these cars have pretty much done it since new i think. my 84 500sec does it under certain circumstances. i changed lots of stuff. dist cap, wires, and a fuel injector, etc etc etc. no change. it hasnt gotten worse either. so if i am going into the vp to buy a paper, i just dont turn it off. then i seldom have a problem. also i always crack the throttle when starting. and old mb mechanic suggested that. it is a 100% improvemnt. better than any of the things i spent good money to do.

1x or 2x a year I can live with...

but, it's also cut out on me in traffic. I shudder to think what if I was passing someone and it guit or if I'm taking a curve at speed and the steering seizes up.

I believe that your car is fuel injected, so it cannot get vapor lock.

My 300TE sometimes stalls/cuts out when coasting to a stop.

It the starts right back.

The fact that your needs 10-15 minutes to restart suggest a heat-related condition that is affecting ignition and/or fuel delivery.

Have you checked the injectors?

Maybe your fuel vent is clogged. The 10-15 min wait is the clue.
Next time try removing the gas cap. This will relieve the pressure and it should start right up. If this works leave the cap loose until you can clear the clog.

If it stalls when moving do not turn the key off and you will be able to steer off of the road. It will not be as easy as with the motor running. Also your brakes will be harder without vacuum to the booster. Be careful!!

That's a theory I haven't heard...

Care to elaborate? A clue, the filler cap is non-original, generic type, would that matter? Is the MB cap different from others? How do you clean the vent?

Thanks.

I forget where the vent is on that tank,I'll have to look at my diag's..

Change that cap out for the correct MB cap.

Drop me an email and I'll send you the diagram of the vent/carbon system, you should be able to disconnect it @ the back of the bottom of the tank.

blueridgemb@gmail.com in case you don't have it handy.

Good call on the cap idea..it's been a while since I've come across that
