124 transmission trouble... again

well since about 5 minutes after i posted this thread last time about 400 other people posted other stuff i guess ill try again:P . my 87 300e auto wont shift up from second, the transmission fluid is a little high so i was wondering if this would cause such a thing to happen and if not, what else could it be? i was thinking maybe the filter could be clogged or maybe somthing with the valves, any recomendations? what about trans ex? im taking the car to a trans shop  within the next few days so id like to know what it could be. thanks much

Check the kick down switch under the accelerator pedal, the accelerator pedal activates it, with you hand push the switch to the floor, you should here it click. If you don’t it’s stuck closed; the transmission will not up shift. Another possibility is a stuck governor, no pressure = no up shift. You will need a oil pressure gauge too check it.

I had exactly the same problem last night. I pulled over and checked the fluid level which was a little low so I topped it up. No instant change, still no upshift but a mile later I revved it to redline and it started shifted and was fine for the rest of my journey (60 miles). Was it just low tranny oil level or something else which will come back again? Thanks

Hello John,

You will find tons of info on this forum about how to check the fluid level in the tranny. It is realy important to do it the right way and it is VERY important that the level is CORRECT.
It is by far the easiest way - and the cheapiest - to make the tranny working/shiffting correctly. It is hard to imaging that sutch a small quantity of oil can make sutch a difference!
Possibly you need no more to solve the problem. I hope it in anyway!
Greetings,

Danny

well i took the car to aamco and he tried everything short of going into the tranny and nothing could be found. hes saying 15 to 2500 for rebuild and would feel "uncomfortable" with me buying the parts at most likely a lower price on this site. to jim: i sent an email asking about that tranny and if anyone has any ideas about the price or anything it could be let me know. im not giving up on the schnauzer just yet.
