190e vibration damper questions

I have some questions regarding the prop shaft mounted vibration damper on my 1984 190E (automatic trans)

I am in the process of replacing both flex disks, center support mount and bearing. when I took the prop shaft apart I found that the vibration damper is all chewed up and the transmission drive flange is broken.( I think I found my vibration problem)

I have been reading the other postings in this forum and there seems to be conflicting information on the vibration damper, some say it is part of the prop shaft and it needs to be there, some posts say you dont need it at all.

I need to know if the vibration damper is needed on this car? if it is needed can it be purchased as a single item or is it part of the prop shaft? and finally if it is needed does anyone have a part number and location where I can get one.

Thanks,

Terry Brailsford
