Key wouldn't turn in my 95 E320 Wagon...
Weird, I tried and tried but my ignition key wouldn't turn. My wife though it was an electrical poblem and got in, locked the doors and the ignition then turned and started the car. Weird, huh? Has this happened to anyone?

Sounds as if your ignition key tumbler is worn. This causes sticking. The problem starts randomly but becomes chronic. Beware that it is a lot cheaper to fix it before it sticks for good. The replacement procedure requires turning it to the first position. When you cant do that you have to cut out the whole steering lock for a lot more $cratch.

Can I DIY replace the key tumbler or is it a job for my indy? Does it require any special tools? Thx.

ignition lock "tumbler" replacement
Use the "Search" function at the top of the page. Many people have replaced
their ignition "tumblers" after using the VIN # to order a new one (with original cut keys) It ain't no big project. You do not want to put this off too long! |
Finally got my indy to replace it for $100. He said I was lucky as it just broke completely apart. Thanks for the warning, guys.

Mine let go when I was up town looking at a wreck. I had to have the tow company tow it back to the shop. Glad I wasn't too far away.
