80s S-Class - what are these wires?

I noticed these yesterday on my car. Appears to be a cloth-like material on some wiring. It is missing a layer of the material on some areas. What do these do and is this cause for concern? They appear to be running to a relay of some sort.
BTW- this is on the passenger side of the engine, on the frame area.

Thanks!

that is a junction box, you are ok as long as no metal wire strands are exposed, the leads there go to the alternator and starter

Thanks. It only appears that only the top layer is missing on a couple of spots, so nothing exposed. Is it normal for these to do this?
