I have seen this question asked many times on this board, but not of the 190's. I am looking at a 1988 model, 96K miles. Looks pretty good, but, I have reservations as I have only worked on my W126 model. I found some discussion on a few subjects, but nothing stuck out to me.
Are there any common problems to look for? (i.e. the dreaded head gasket leak on the 300E's, or the suspension on my 560SEL) Besides maintenance records, and the obvious original paint, original drivetrain, what else? I appreciate the advice! But remember, if you talk me into buying it, there will be future tech help questions! p.s. The best part of this car? It matches the color of my 560SEL perfectly!!:D |
Which motor does this car have?
|
2.3 liter 4 cylinder, auto, (sorry Larry), new style wheels, cold a/c.
Thanks! |
You can fix just about everything on this car by yourself. Parts are not very expensive and the cars are solid. You won't get as much life out of the four cylinder engine as you would a six cylinder. Things to watch out for is the Automatic Climate Control make sure everything works properly, there are problems with the power windows in a lot of 190s and you will probably need to replace the rubber in the suspension as the rubber deteriates as a function of time as well as mileage.

How does the 2.3 compare to your 2.6? Ever driven the other?
Thanks for the help guys! |
On another note.....The 2.3 is easier to work on, and
you could get it with a 5 speed. This makes it par with the 2.6 auto. Annnd.....you have first gear starts. Still on original clutch at 200K+ This model seems to have problems with the rear door windows. A trick that sometimes works is push down rear window switch on rear door while slamming it shut, if window switch at console will not operate window. Gary |
I have driven 2.3s and the difference in power is significant with the 2.6. The 2.3s are very dependable. I'm just a gear head.

To finish this up....
I took a look at the car, under and around. Long story, short version: hit and repaired once in the front passenger side, once in the rear, dead center. and the repairs were not done as well as I would prefer. Also, I did not think the mantenance had been kept up with. (gunk under the oil cap). It was just not the car to buy. Thanks for all of the advice. I will keep it in mind when I find the next one. |
