POLL: How much are you paying for an oil change?

and where?

about $40 with mobil 20w-50 at a M-B indie. no additional service, just oil change and new filter, maybe topping other fluids. Car is a 190E 2.6.

danwatt 12-13-2005 03:25 AM

$20 for delo plus Mann filter. Five minutes of my time with the electric pump.

JBR 12-13-2005 08:58 AM

Just the cost of 9 qts of pennzoil 15-40 and a filter. Do it at home.
This allows me to notice any up coming problems.

Hatterasguy 12-13-2005 02:40 PM

I do my own. Oil is about $40+$15 for the filter.

lee polowczuk 12-13-2005 02:56 PM

do all three of ours at home..

usually get mann filters for about 4-4.50. Recently switched over to shell rotella synthetic to cut down the time between changes.... always did them at 3k...now will probably go to 7k with syn as opposed to dino.

Who knows may switch back to dino after the winter.... you can always get dino oil on sale somewhere for 1.29 for good stuff. darn syn never has a deal. get mine at wally world right now-- about 3.70 qt

we suck ours out.... drink coffee while it drains... screw the filter on.... my biggest hassle is taking the oil to the convenience center.

$12 for OE filter, about $28 for Valvoline High Mileage oil (unless Crappy Tire has it on sale), and then the time it takes to let it all drain out. My indy will do the oil change for about $45 using regular Castrol oil, but I just prefer doing it myself.

manny 12-13-2005 06:02 PM

OEM filter & Mobil 1 0-W40, about $ 45.00.
Oh, and the obligatory 2 beers while I watch the oil drain. ;) ,

Craig 12-13-2005 06:24 PM

OEM filter for $15 and 8 quarts of Mobil 1 5W40 for $48 = $63. + tax.

Benzadmiral 12-14-2005 10:01 AM

I do it myself

Usually about $9.00 for Mann/Knecht/Wix filter; approx. $1.30 to $1.75/qt. for 6 quarts of dino oil. I use a Topsider to suck the oil out.

That said, in College Station this September while on "vacation" from the hurricanes, I had no access to my gear, so I took it to a VW/Mercedes repair independent. I brought them six quarts of $1.29 TropArtic 10W30 synblend and a filter, as above. Labor ran $24.00.

oil change cost

I change my own oil in all my vehicles, can do it faster than it would take me to drive to a mechanic. Cost usually $15-$20 for oil and filter. Always change oil with engine warm.

Dave M 12-14-2005 11:25 AM

About $45 parts and labor from my independent on a 98 E320. That also gets me a 32 point inspection, resetting any indicators, and not having to mess with disposing the used oil, which, around here is getting harder and harder to do. Plus, usually some good MB or just cars in general conversation with a really excellent mechanic. Always change the oil on my other vehicles myself.

stayalert 12-14-2005 11:59 AM

 just did my VW......Add 2 bags of kitty litter and some frustration at knocking over the drain bucket in the driveway....In retrospect. Still beats having someone else do it....as I like to check other things while I'm changine oil.....

neanderthal 12-14-2005 04:07 PM

$50

i dont have a garage to park my car, just street parking, else id do it meself

Kestas 12-14-2005 07:45 PM

I will go to great extremes to avoid having someone else change my oil. When I lived in an apartment I used a clean bucket covered in a plastic garbage bag for my drain pan.... poured the old oil in a container for recycling... then invaginated the plastic bag for the trash.

I also brought my own hose to wash my car during the warm winter days.

Oil Change Costs

I always change my own oil. Gives me a reason to get under my cars and nose around. For my w140's it costs about $50 to change the oil. ($40 for the oil plus $10 or less for Mann filter) I only use synthetic oil, viscosity based on the season (5W30 for winter and 10W40 for summer). Oil change is so expensive cause they both use almost 8 quarts (7.5 in the s320 and 8 in the s420). The one time I had it done in a quick change shop cost was $85. The local dealer wants $125. I laughed all the way to the local auto store to buy some oil.

Add me to the list of folks that change their own oil. $52.00 for 9qts. of Mobil 1 0w40 + $10 for filter = $62.00 and I never left the comfort of my house.

What's your time worth? :)

$240/h in the office. At home, priceless.
