1997 SL500 OBD Questions

I want to be as specific as I can. I looked across the the forum and came across many articles but could find the one that answered my questions, please bear with me.
Background:
I know what the standard OBD2 connector looks like. My 96 C280 has it.

Questions:
1- Is 1997 SL500 Fully OBD2 compliant? If so,

2- I can only find the 38-pin connector on the firewall box, and there is NO connector over the gas pedal, like there is on say a SL320. The owners manual also confirms this. So where is the standard OBD 2 connector on these cars, if it is Fully Compliant? If not,

3- There is only a 38-PIN connector, then how do I obtain an adaptor to adapt to the standard connector.

Needless to say, I have a CEL and I would like to know what is going on. Thanks for the help.
