W126: Replacement Windshield

Hi, can any normal glass shop handle the above (420SEL)? Are they particularly expensive?

dbgrate 12-31-2005 05:07 PM

My 126,a 300SDL,had a new windshield put in 4 months ago,by a large glass chain...no problem at all..the price,I can't say,as it was done through an insurance claim.

The last time I had my W123 windshield replaced (by Elite Auto Glass) the cost was less than $200, as I recall.

The local glass shop did mine, they claimed they did quite a few W126's before and were familer with them.

My insurance company paid for it, but it wasn't cheap I want to say $500 maybe more.

I didn't get cheap glass either, no bargin Asian glass I got OE glass.

I had the windshield on W124 replaced about a month ago. Guy came to my house, had it done in about an hour. Charged me about $150. It is aftermarket, new, looks like original, and is fantastic. Very nice job, excellent price. So Cal area

Local boneyards here have glass (OEM) for $25 for the front. They install for about $80-120 depending on how they feel when you catch them. Just be sure to get a new seal installed at the same time, they're $40 or so typically.

I wonder if they have 150K miles of highway sandblasting on them??;)

Large glass company did mine at the house in an hour or so - original was terribly sand and rock etched. They did fine on glass, but screwed up the chrome trim cover a couple of times - they bent a portion initially and had to buy a piece at local MB dealership to replace it. Not the best job.

:D Probably so, yet my cars aren't Concours vehicles for the green at Pebble Beach. I don't think I could get myself to pay $500 or so for an OEM windshield unless it was some odd vehicle.

Funny how an errant brick manages to hit these old pitted windshields every so often.

Don't ya love road debris?

My SD looks weird sitting on one chrome rim (the spare) with a skinnier tire than the rest. That tire went bad yesterday, late afternoon. :(

Hatterasguy 01-02-2006 08:58 PM

You can't do that around here. Why the heck would you pay anything to have a sand blasted shot windshield installed? Just call your insurance company and say you can't see out of your old one. It is silly how simple it is to get a new one.

I almost couldn't see out of the old one in the SDL. It would turn white as I was driving towards the sun.

I caught a fist sized rock this morning with my windshield. It hit right at the base, over where I think the coolant heater is. Amica has OK'd me to take it to the MB dealer :D

Hopefully I can take some pictures of the process.
