Most folks would probably say, "none."

Yeah, I'm afraid the W140 S class cars are known to be extraordinarily expensive to own and operate.

In particular, the early models, '92-'95-ish, were particularly problematic.

The consensus is that '98-'99 are the best to own, but at minimum, the newer the better.

My aunt in South Carolina has a 500SEL, but I think it is a 1994-1995. Aside from A/C woes, it has been extremely reliable. I think the A/C problem was the common problem with these cars. I think it was a $3000. repair.

1997-99. W140's are fine cars. The learning curve is not steep at all, going from a W126 to a W140. Lots of similer stuff.

I guess you should first properly separate the two W140 categories: pre-facelift and post-facelift.

Pre-facelift run from 1991 to 1994.

Post-facelift run from 1995 to 1999.

Pre-facelift the definite best year is 1994 (late).

Post-facelift models are usually less prone to problems than pre-facelift models, although as said above, the better years are 1998-99.

Try reading this post to learn a little about W140s reliability and pre and post-facelift differences:
