'86 420 Power Steering Filter: Where?

OK, I changed the pressure hose, opened the reservoir and found: no filter. There is a tan plastic device under a small nut on a threaded rod, with a spring under the plastic piece. In the very bottom of the reservoir is a flat steel plate with 8 holes in it, and it does not appear that it is supposed to lift out. I bought a Hengst filter, nr. E26H, and it will drop in the reservoir, but it's obvious it doesn't fit and it won't filter anything if it's in there. This car has the ZF pump with the blue tag. If you can advise, please do. I am changing the fluid, to Valvoline syn. The system has red stuff in it now.

That's your filter.

Ok....

I lifted the plate out; that's all there is. So, if I understand this situation, there is no filter.

Wow, so if I understand correctly, your car was running without a powersteering filter?

PS Filter

You are correct: There is no filter. The plate is just that: a plate. Perhaps the filter goes in place of the plate. If so, why is the plate there? It is obviously not homemade, but was made for, and fits perfectly, where I found it. Hilfe...

Exclamation

Throw the plate AWAY & buy the filter that Hassman posted. MB number 000-466-16-04 (Mann H85) Go to fastlane & insert that number!

YOU car came with a small filter insert (000-466-07-04) that went below that plate, that part hasn't been used for 14-15 years. Replaced by the filter with the metal plate made onto it!

Ok

Thanks for the information; I already have the replacement filter. Probably the system has never been serviced since new.
