Replacing steering damper
I just don't want to get in over my head. On my 1984 190d, where is the damper located? Must I raise the engine? You know, stuff like that. Sure do thank anyone who takes the time.

Probable best to get a cd manual or paper manual.
Historically one of the easiest replacements on a MB. Underneath car...may or may not have to put it on jack stands. I think it takes a 17mm wrench to replace. I believe it's tied to the idler arm and center drag link. Shouldn't take much more than an hour to replace since this is your first time... second time is probably 15 minutes. I have had a 72 mb and a couple of 89's. Both had steering dampers.. very similar. |
Yes, it is very easy to replace in about 10 minutes, just 2 nuts and its done. The part, looks like a thin shock absorber, cost me about $50 18 months ago at the dealer. As said, it may be necessary to raise the car's front end, so the 10 minutes begins after that.
