It looks my '84 380sl has the black wire secured to the positive side of the battery and the red wire secured to the negative side. Is this normal?

While it is optically incorrect ( colors ), it doesn't matter, as long as they go to the right places.
Could be a safety issue though when somebody tries to boost the battery, or charge it, without verifying polarity first.
