Rear Window Stops Short of Closing
 

On our 1990 190E I installed weather guard shields at the top of the windows.
One of the windows must have been hitting the base of a guard and has now reset itself to stop at the lower position... about one inch from full close.

What must I do to reset the window unit so that the window closes all the way to the top?

open panel and check for clip that has slipped.If that is the problem it will probaly happen again.you can drill a screw
through it ir disable window to keep it up.

What he means is that your window regulator has failed. It is very common on the 190e's you can take the door panel off and try to fix it, or you can buy a new one and replace it.

do you mean it goes all the way to the top and then backs off, as if it was sensing it was hitting something or does it just stop 1" from the top?

The window consistantly stops about one inch from full close... even with the weather guard removed.

Once you open up the door and see the way the glass attaches to the regulator you will see why the window stops just short of closing. There are two attachment points for the mount that attaches the glass to the regulator. When one breaks it piviots 180 degrees dropping the window about two inchs lower than designed. If I recall the part is plastic....so you will most likely need a new regulator. The Weatherguard might have accelerated the breaking of the regulator.

That makes sense to me Sick. I'll open up the door and have a look. Maybe there is an alternative other than replacing the whole kit and kabootle. Maybe there is a way to reattach the plastic. Epoxy maybe. I'll check it out.

Dear Earl: I now appear to have your same problem w/my '91. Whatever bacame of your outcome? Were you able to somehow reattach the plastic mount?

I think you can successfully repair the regulator with JB weld under the condition that you never use the window again. It will ALWAYS break again if you lower/raise the window (maybe not the first time...).

You could fix the regulator and remove power at the motor so that no one can accidentally operate the window.

If you want a functional window spend the money and get a NEW regulator.
