Clk230 (wdb208) Fuel Sender

I have just replaced the left and right fuel sender units because the fuel gauge was showing empty and the low fuel light was on with [plenty of fuel in the tank]. Still the same problem, so I connected the old sensors up externaly and moved the floats at the same time. To my surprise the fuel gauge works back to front, yes it will go to full when both floats are resting on empty. Surely the instrument cluster and or gauges don't need calibrating. [ If I bridge the connectors on both sender units the gauge moves to full]Please help.
