How to clean out brake fluid reservoir?

I bought a 500E that was stored for the last 5 years and there is a coating of black crud on the inside of the brake fluid reservoir above the fluid level. Can I remove it from the master cylinder and clean it out with some bent wire or q-tips or does the reservoir have chambers that I won't be able to reach? Trying to save $50 and not buy a new one.

Just do a thorough brake system flush and it will come out squeeky clean. The brake system should be totally flushed with new fluid annually anyway.

To do this, draw the existing fluid from the reservoir with a large syringe, mityvac or turkey baster. Pour in some fresh fluid and start flushing all four wheels. Keep going around to all wheels until all fluid is coming out totally clear.

I have recently discovered that Prestone synthetic brake fluid seems to clean better and end up clearer than any other fluid that I've used. Since this car has sat up so long, plan on flushing at least one quart through it.

Good luck,

Good luck,

I'll be using a MityVac compressed air powered vacuum bleeder from each caliper. How can I clean the crud off the walls of the reservoir? Just pouring in brake fluid wont do it.

Add it to your profile, and/or signature.

To answer your question.
Replace the reservoir and grommets with clean NEW.
Do not waste time with futile attempts at cleaning.
Almost every reservoir that is black inside, is cheaper to replace rather than clean.
The only effective way to clean a reservoir = remove it from the master cylinder = New grommets = possible damage to the old brittle reservoir, cleaning chemicals may damage the reservoir = then you must reinstall the old brittle reservoir.

HOW do you attach the Reservoir to the Master Cylinder??

Be careful as brake fluid will take off paint. If you spill, be sure to clean up area immediately and flush it with water ASAP.
