126 with clunk in front end
 

My 87 560 sel has a clunk in the front end during turns and speed bumps at slow speeds while depressing the brakes. I am having some brake work done in a couple of weeks and wonder if anyone has some suggestions as for what to look for while the wheels are off. Also, I replaced my accumulators last year and they raised the vehicle up from it's saggy position. However, I still feel the vehicle is riding a little rough in the back. The struts are not leaking and I am certain the hydraulic pump is operational. I know there are alot of posts out there on this topic, but is it worth jacking the car up a little higher in the rear by using the level controller?

Had same problem with my 380SE and new upper control arms fixed it. At first I heard clunk on drivers side , had uca repalced and then about 3 months later had same noise on right side and replaced th uca

It could be your ball joints and/or other steering parts. I just replaced mine (lower) and tie rods and the clunk in mine ('91 300SE) is now gone. I am now a bit more picky as to who gets to touch my car, find someone who knows about a Benz. Center link will be replaced by me next week when my new starter comes in, then I'll be "on the road again......":)

Mine just makes a clunk when I go over railroad tracks, or hit uneven pavement. :rolleyes:

It ONLY happens when you're on the brakes? If so, is has to be brake-related. Try coasting over a speed bump, or making a turn, without the brakes. Do you still hear the clunk? If so, it could be a number of things, like those mentioned above. Check your balljoint boots to see if they're cracked open. Dry balljoints last far a little while before going kaput.

Try holding the shifter in your hand when you expect it to "clunk". Does the shifter move when it clunks? If so, you probably need new subframe mounts, or motor mounts (your engine shifting position is making the clunk). My car makes a clunk when hitting speed bumps, turning, or slowing down, and my shifter moves.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have noticed that when depressing the brakes the clunk is much more pronounced. It seems to happen when I press the brakes on even payment as well. I have also noticed a click sound with each rotation of the back left wheel. Hopefully this is brake related as well as the sound is rather metallic. The brakes have been squeaking while not being depressed. Next saturday the pads are being replaced and the rotors are being turned. I have a sneaking suspicion that the ball joints might be the culprit for the clunk. Am I looking at a big job????

Guide rod mounts 87sdl just had them changed for same problem .3.5 hrs + parts also changed tie rods::fixed it $$$
